But my biggest disappointment was seeing Bernie buttons worn by women I had previously respected — women whose educational and career choices, beyond their right to vote, were possible only because of the efforts of courageous women crusading over the past century! Hillary is a worthy successor to these women. She has fought for children’s health and rights, women’s status and issues, families, and the disadvantaged all her career. She has worked tirelessly promoting our Democratic values, causes, and candidates and has gained invaluable experience and knowledge of every arm of our political system. Twenty-four years ago as First Lady, her first priority was to reform our health system; unfortunately the newly-elected Democratic majority Senate and House did not support her efforts. Maybe those ideas were too ‘socialist’? She did not quit crusading but has continued fighting for and supporting those in need, trying to make this a better county. After her White House experiences, she became a two-term Senator from New York, the first woman elected to that office from that state; these years gave her the opportunity to reach out to and work with other senators, even those ‘across the aisle’. More recently she served President Obama as an outstanding Secretary of State, impressing the world and its leaders with her intelligence, diplomacy, and understanding of our shared goals and crises. This background and her experiences, along with her character and intelligence have uniquely equipped her to be an outstanding President. I’m delighted to have the chance to elect Hillary Clinton as our first woman President! LaVerne Coupeville |
